First gig, one of my most fulfilling fun experiences =)

My first gig, one of the most fulfilling fun experiences =)

Hey Jordan here,
If you wish to learn guitar, I’m glad you found this website and I strongly suggest you keep reading…

This is my uncensored guitar learning story.  The ups, the downs, what stuff didn’t work and finally…what actually helped me progress rapidly and easily at guitar.

Ok, here goes..
I had gained and lost hobbies over the years. Living without a hobby makes me feel so empty, I mean, we all need something to do right? Musical hobbies are great to pass time, I free a lot of time for it now, however your girlfriend/boyfriend may get jealous! So try control yourself. ;)

I have a pipe dream to make a living out of playing guitar, I was once told this.
If you can make a living doing what you love, you’ve won life’s lottery” This saying has really stuck to me. Whether you have further ambitions in the music industry or just looking for a past-time hobby. The first step is universally the same, this is it:
Start Playing Guitar!

Here are some of the issues I encountered during my guitar learning journey:
Money is one of the largest issues I had with learning guitar, in Australia lessons are $50 per hour. This is quite a large chunk out of the weekly ‘fuel in the tank and food on the table’ budget it could even effect your beer budget! I found that most of the time with good guitar teachers it is necessary to commit to a contract to periods of at least 1 month, this is $200 a month for 4 hours worth of lessons. This was something I simply could not afford and I am sure I’m not the only one. This is the exact reason I made this website, there is very little real advice for us out there on google.

I wandered into guitar beginner packs, online guitar courses and guitar ebooks. I spent a small fortune on different guitar courses, some delivered, some didn’t. I wish someone could have just told me which ones were worth it and know exactly what to expect BEFORE I forked out cash for them. This my friend, is what I am doing for you now. No hype, this is my experience.

I started with Jamorama it quite simply blows all other guitar beginner packs out of the water. I learned all the foundations of guitar correctly and easily through this guitar course. It is set in a format that you actually have fun learning guitar, which makes you learn a lot faster, trust me. If you are an absolute beginner to guitar, Jamorama is no doubt the way to go. It contains hundreds of instructional guitar videos, play along tracks for improvisation, guitar ebooks and guitar software. All the necessary resourses for a beginner have been carefully selected and included in this package. Software includes a guitar tuner, some fun games which really helped me learn to read music and a metronome to help play in time to the beat.

This guitar course will progress you all the way to an advanced guitar player and it is a LOT faster then relying on private lessons. Last time I checked, the price was $50, about the same cost of a 1 hour guitar lesson. Not bad value right? There is one flaw however, Jamorama cannot point out something you are playing wrong. This is the one reason that I recommend that you use Jamorama to start out and get the odd guitar lesson every now and then just to give you some pointers. This was not an issue for me because everything was explained so clearly that you would really have to not be paying any attention to develop bad technique. Also, there is a 100% no questions asked guarrentee on this product. No risk is a great feeling :) imagine trying to pull this move on a guitar teacher! haha!

There is one more course that I use now called JamPlay, it is a website which you pay $20 subscription per month. It is completely worth it, they have 21,000 minutes of guitar lessons from various different teachers on their website. The amount I have learned from JamPlay is incomparable to traditional guitar lessons. You learn a lot more when you get lessons from different teachers, every guitarist has a different style and this is the same for guitar teachers. They also have online games which help with reading music notation and recognising all notes on the guitar. One of the most impressive features of this membership is the live questions and answers, you can ask anything that you are unsure of about guitar technique to the JamPlay staff.

I recommend JamPlay as an extension to Jamorama, if you have already started learning guitar then JamPlay is the best you will find online.  However, if you are a complete beginner guitarist Jamorama is no doubt the best bang for your buck. Plus, there is no monthly fee and it has a complete 100% satisfaction money back guarrentee = no risk, this is for both Jamorama & JamPlay.

These two guitar courses are by far the best available and they more than delivered what I expected out of them.
Go with which ever one is more appealing to you or is economic for your situation, or get both to decide and refund one of them later once you choose your favorite. Alternatively you can search lessons on youtube, it’s free so thats a bonus, however the lessons come nowhere close to the quality of these courses and you will not progress anywhere near as fast.

Hope this helps your future ambitions!

Starter Guitar Pack vs Private Guitar Lessons – which is better?

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

So should I get private guitar lessons? or a starter guitar pack?
There are pros and cons to both…

PROS for having a guitar teacher (private lessons):

  • They will point out bad technique and help you understand what you are doing wrong.
  • Give you motivation to practice.
  • Ask them any guitar technique etc question.

CONS of having a guitar teacher (private lessons):

  • COST – Recurring payments is a commitment many people, simply cannot afford.
  • Must schedule a specific time for a lesson in advance. Which is hard for many people who work full time.
  • May have an incompetent guitar tutor – How could a beginner guitarist know if they are being taught the wrong technique?

PROS of guitar beginner packs (Jamorama or JamPlay):

  • CHEAP - a 1hr guitar lesson is more expensive than most of the best guitar beginner packs available which are jam packed with instructional guitar videos, software and books. Completely incomparable to private guitar lessons.
  • Choice between various different guitar teachers, you will learn a lot more if you do not exclusively get lessons from one teacher. Everyone has different guitar styles and the same goes for guitar teachers.
  • You will be taught 100% correct technique, provided you choose a good guitar pack.
  • You can replay instructional guitar videos over and over again, so if you miss something, you can always look back. Very useful.
  • Usually have a money back guarantee, so you can return it if you are unhappy. Imagine trying that with a guitar teacher.

CONS of guitar beginner packs (Jamorama or JamPlay):

  • If you use bad technique, the starter guitar pack will not be able to personally point it out. If you are taught good technique to begin with however, this shouldn’t be a problem.
  • Can’t ask questions and get a direct answer however, I am sure you will find the answer within the package if you try find it. JamPlay (online guitar course) offers live questions and answers online to it’s members which is very handy.

In conclusion, I think the best way is to do both. Start learning via a guitar course as well as occasionally going to a guitar teacher when you need some motivation and guitar technique help. To read more about guitar beginner packs, I share my experiences with Jamorama & JamPlay HERE.
